In Its Third Year, Scholarship Awarded to Lynchburg College Senior
NEWPORT NEWS, VA (7/9/14) — Taylar Cannaday, a senior at Lynchburg College, is this year’s recipient of the Michael E. Mares Scholarship, endowed by PBMares, LLP and administered by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Educational Foundation. PBMares is a regional accounting and business-consulting firm serving clients throughout Virginia.
The Mares Scholarship was created by the many friends and peers of Michael Mares, who passed away in 2009, to honor his life, inspire and advance scholars who show the promise of extraordinary professional talent, and identify and develop the next generation to carry on his exceptional life work. Mares was the co-founder and a partner at Witt Mares.
“Mike symbolized the pinnacle of his profession as a pre-eminent and nationally known attorney and accountant in taxation,” says his former partner and fellow co-founder, Alan Witt. “As a person, he changed the course of the lives and organizations in which he was involved, helping them to reach greater heights.”
Continues Witt, “For all the positive impacts Mike made to the profession he loved and the people he served, we felt it was appropriate to honor Mike’s memory through the establishment of a scholarship in his name.”
According to Taylar’s accounting professor, she has shown exceptional leadership inside and outside the classroom. She has mentored students in accounting principles for several years as a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) leader and recently interned for a local CPA firm. Taylar is also passionate about promoting financial literacy and began teaching financial literacy seminars to high school and college students at the Central Virginia Federal Credit Union where she served as student branch manager.
Taylar is also a student member of the VSCPA, recipient of the H. Burton Bates Jr. Scholarship in 2013, and attended the VSCPA Leaders Institute in 2013.
Taylar Cannaday will graduate from Lynchburg College in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in fraud investigation.
“PBMares’ generosity has had a tremendous impact and will continue to do so by supporting promising, ambitious accounting students like Taylar,” says Molly Wash, Academic & Career Development Director at the VSCPA. “We are extremely grateful for the establishment of the Michael E. Mares Scholarship to help support the education and development of future CPAs.”
