Mares Scholar Fund
These words describe the life work of Michael Mares. In his honor, the Mares Scholar Fund was created by his peers to inspire and advance scholars who show the promise of extraordinary professional talent.
Mike symbolized the pinnacle of his profession as a pre-eminent and nationally known attorney and accountant in taxation. As a person, he changed the course of the lives and organizations in which he was involved, helping them to reach greater heights.
In 2009, we lost Mike to an inoperable and aggressive brain cancer. Many people asked about a way to make a contribution in Mike’s name. Inspired, we partnered with the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Educational Foundation to develop the Mares Scholar Fund to identify and develop the next generation to carry on his exceptional life work.

Mares Scholar Fund
Initially the fund will support an annual college scholarship. As the fund builds, the concept will expand to a program that includes elements such as meeting renowned thinkers in law and accounting, participating in national and regional professional conferences and conducting a research project. And of course, there must be an element of fun for selected scholars, because Mike was one of the most fun people we’ve ever known. The program will be designed and overseen by a committee comprised of his colleagues from the VSCPA, the AICPA, the law profession, and professional education.
Make A Contribution
We are letting our clients, colleagues and friends know about the Mares Scholar Fund, should they wish to contribute. We plan to keep donors informed about program developments and share updates about the Mares scholars and their activities each year, so that donors remain a part of the success that their dollars created.
Our goal is to propel each Mares Scholar to achievement throughout their career, helped by experience in the program. Most importantly, we believe that they will be inspired to give more back to the world than they gained. This is the legacy of Mike Mares that is echoed in every fond memory, laugh, brilliant answer, and creative idea. Help us create an enduring program in his name.
