Mike Mares: A Life of Service



  • Recipient of the AICPA Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest award given by the accounting profession in the area of taxation.
  • Named the 1998 Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) Outstanding Member.
  • A tireless volunteer leader with the AICPA. Most notably, he served on the AICPA board of directors and as chair and a member of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee. He was a member of the AICPA Professional Ethics Executive Committee and the AICPA Strategic Planning Committee.
  • Past vice chair of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner’s Advisory Council.
  • Active in a number of other professional organizations throughout his career, including the Virginia Society of CPAs, the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar and the Newport News Bar.
  • Repeatedly named one of Virginia’s “Super CPAs” by Virginia Business magazine and has five times been named as one of the “100 Most Influential CPAs in the U.S.” by Accounting Today.
  • Named one of the “Top 50 IRS Representation Practitioners” CPA Magazine.
  • Frequently testified before the United States Congress on various tax matters.
  • Sought after speaker and is a multiple recipient of AICPA’s “Outstanding Discussion Leader” award.
  • An active volunteer with Rotary, Mary Immaculate Hospital Board of Directors, the Virginia War Memorial Museum Foundation Board of Trustees, and has served as Vice-chair of the Hampton Mayor’s Commission on the Handicapped, and as President of the Board of the Transitions Family Violence Services.
  • Contributor to a William & Mary Law School Scholarship: Waller Mill Ranch Fellowship: Established by five members of the Class of 1977, Stephen C. Conte, Peter J. Goergen, Edward W. Lautenschlager, Michael E. Mares and Darrell L. Sayer.
  • Director of Tax Programs for Mares Nichols CPE, Inc.
  • A published author, his books include: IRS Practice and Procedures, LLCs, Practitioner’s 1065 Deskbook, Guide to Real Estate Taxation,¬†Industry Taxation Guide, and Individual Case Studies in Tax Planning. Co-author of Limited Liability Companies and Guide to Dealing With the IRS.
  • His articles appeared regularly in Virginia trade journals, and he has been interviewed on MSNBC, CNBC’s Power Lunch and Court TV’s Prime Time Justice on tax matters.
