The COVID-19 pandemic served as a stark reminder of how the unexpected can quickly shift our reality. The immense amount of change that happened seemingly overnight affected virtually every aspect of life. Beyond changes to daily living routines brought about by government orders, the fear of contracting COVID-19 and potentially dying was prominently on the minds of many as they navigated daily life. The unfortunate reality is that 600,000 people died from the virus. Thankfully, the vaccine has been a game-changer, but the pandemic caused many to contemplate end-of-life issues. What would happen if they suddenly became incapacitated or died? Who would handle the family business? How would assets and wealth be divided in a way that meets my desires?
These are the type of questions that are often left unaddressed because of the difficulty of contemplating one’s own death. In fact, the 2021 Wills and Estate Planning Study found that only 43% of individuals over 55 years of age have conducted formal estate planning. This is a very low number given how essential planning is to the orderly distribution of assets and wealth. Failure to conduct proper planning not only risks creating family conflict, cause the dissipation of assets, and even result in higher estate and income taxes.
