Our Story
Since its earliest days—beginning with PBGH, LLP’s founding in 1963 as Phibbs, Burkholder, Geisert & Huffman in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Witt Mares, PLC’s establishment in Newport News, Virginia in 1979—PBMares has been on a continuous journey of growth and transformation. Both firms steadily expanded their footprints and expertise through strategic expansions and mergers, broadening their presence across Virginia and into the Metro DC market by partnering with firms in Richmond, throughout Hampton Roads, Fairfax, and other key locations.
Throughout this evolution, the organization remained steadfast in its dedication to client-centered service and an unwavering commitment to excellence, laying the foundation for the dynamic firm PBMares is today.
2013
PBGH, LLP and Witt Mares, PLC Merger
On January 1, 2013 to form PBMares, LLP, making it the largest Virginia-headquartered firm by CPA count. Combined, the new firm expands to eight locations throughout Virginia and strengthens the firm’s menu of services and industry knowledge.
2016
PBMares breaks into the Top 100
As determined by INSIDE Public Accounting, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to growth – a commitment which is driven by how best the firm can serve its clients and team members.
2017
PBMares is ranked No. 1 on Accounting Today’s Firms to Watch list
PBMares is also listed at No. 5 in the Top Firms for the Capital Region.
2018
PBMares expands into Maryland
through the addition of Santos, Postal & Company in Rockville, strengthening the firm’s presence in the region
2020
PBMares expands its geographical footprint
with the addition of two RSM US LLP North Carolina offices: New Bern and Morehead City, enhancing the firm’s recruiting capabilities and consulting services.
2020-2021
Harvey Johnson named as CEO
Harvey was elected in 2020, spent a year as CEO-Elect/Co-CEO and then began his first term officially in January of 2021. He is committed to continuing the Firm's focus on its clients by expanding and innovating service offerings to proactively meet their needs.
2022
PBMares continues its expansion
in North Carolina through the acquisition of the Wilmington, NC office of RSM US LLP.
2024
PBMares establishes a new Risk Advisory Practice
and an Operational Excellence Service to help clients better respond to evolving business risk and gain access to business process improvement solutions.
2024
pbmares.combines with Fairfax Firm
BSB CPA + Advisors, solidifying the firm’s presence in Northern Virginia and adding depth in existing industry niches.
